Beautiful Invasion: Scotch Broom hugging the cliffs beside Netarts Bay beach OR – 18H x 24W inches soft pastels on paper. During early May along the west coast, hillsides, forests, dunes and ditches are covered with the deep, vibrant, most gorgeous yellow flowers of Scotch Broom. Cytisus scoparius is an invasive species displacing native plants, shrubs and trees.

Left, first phase and above after puddles of water were allowed to soak in certain areas, then paint was blown with a straw. Paint was also removed in some areas. This created a much more dynamic painting.

I don’t know if I’ll be able to finish ‘The Fourth of July’ as planned in time for the American holiday. Leaving for Canada on Monday, and will be away for two weeks. I’ve been painting and drawing a few gifts for relatives, one of them this pet portrait. The fur is defined by scratches using my fingernail under a wet cloth.
