The Fourth of July
September 20, 2007
The Fourth of July, Orange Milkweed – preliminary drawing for a larger painting, 22 x 30 inches Oil pastels on watercolor paper, started yesterday. I haven’t used color for a while … terrifying, but just jumped in and started scribbling.

Hi Dad, thanks for commenting. Wow, after 47 years, you’d think a person who’s in love with color would be able to start work on a big white page without fear…it’s very odd! After such a long term of doing mostly B/W pencil drawings and painting only trees, those vibrant colors had me doubtful about pulling this one off. Also, staying accurate and loose at the same time is kind of a mid-brain compromise (and ol’ Lefty still wants a little more organization!) Before giving in to more definition though, the drawing needs some sitting time. It’s taped onto a shelf where I only see it in passing, and that’s a good way to study something when you’re not sure what to do next. Could be there’s nothing more to do.
