Children: graphite illustrations
With this series I practice the discipline that drawing commands, because portraits are the perfect challenge for that. When drawing with graphite/pencil, the eraser is used just as much because negative spaces are as important in composition as the subjects themselves.
I only do portraits for myself or family now because it’s not my specialty. As far as recreating likenesses, every millimeter makes a difference in portraiture. Customers are picky, and rightly so. My last commission for a portrait, a large painting of 3 boys, took months, and although I consulted with the clients continually through the process, they refused to pay for it when it was done. I now recommend ordering from artists who don’t do anything but portraits.
