Polypore Fungi (WIP)

October 31, 2007

                                    Polypore Fungi - 58 x 41 x 1.5, unfinished Polypore Fungi - detail #1 Polypore Fungi - detail #2

The 3D fungi idea was fun to try. I ended up carving the modeling paste and plaster after it dried because the paste was too goopy and hard to manage while it was wet. The paste was applied then built gradually, letting it dry before applying more…then carved. Commercial Modeling paste does not sand well at all, so I finally applied a bit of drywall compound to help tidy it.

    Hi Nikki,
the carving’s come along very nicely. Looks very natural – was a good idea to use the molding paste.
Maybe the painting needs a bit more contrast i.e, a counterpart for the tree. You have that relatively dark area in the upper left – maybe a bit more dark and a bit more contrast would help…

Hi Petra, I’m just about to post the update with more contrast. Thanks so much for the helpful critique.

I can smell it, and the damp moldy leaves at the bottom. You got through to me with this one Nikki.
