I just started watercolors classes today with Jo Williams in Denton, TX.  Watercolors are in a league of their own…that’s what I learned today. Acrylics are my favorite medium because of their versatility, and I always start out covering the canvas using watercolor techniques, but even though both have similar properties at the wateriest level, they are nothing alike. Brushing up on watercolors skills though, will positively add to confidence in using acrylics.  I haven’t worked alongside others for a while either, so class critique will be really helpful too.

Looks like you’ve got a good teacher. And I like your paintings. Very sensitive. I used watercolors and still do on occasion. I just love the forgiveness of acrylics. Don’t like it? It’s gone!!
P.S. don’t throw away ‘ruined’ watercolor paper- It can be gessoed (50% white gesso, 25% gloss medium, 25% H2O) when that’s dry, a layer of clear gesso and you can paint on it with watercolor (or anything) again.

Funny how all the things taken for granted with the comfort of acrylics-painting, like composition, design, color and values really stand out when trying a new medium.
Thanks for the tip about recycling WC paper, Virginia – it’s so expensive.
