The Art begins with most recent work first, including Acrylics paintings on canvas, drawings on paper and mixed media pieces, followed by the ongoing collection Paper Places, and Series in Pencil: Children. All tree/forest-specific Art (my favorite subject) is or will be listed here, but has also been isolated in The Majesty of Trees website.
The backs of each painting or framed drawings are finished with brown paper and include special written notes plus a short Bio inside a clear sealed pocket. Framed works on paper are under plexiglass protection unless otherwise requested. Hanging apparatus: D-rings, screws, and weight-appropriate gauged wire crimped inside metal sleeves using a vice; no twisted, fraying wires.

Paper Places, a Collection of Oil Pastels on Paper
During 2006 I started incorporating travel experiences into my work using Oil Pastels on paper as the main medium; some involve graphite, or are experiments mixing oil (pastels) and water (WC paints). The series illustrates impressions of landscapes across the U.S., Canada, Australia, Mexico, and Costa Rica. Expressions and styles are deliberately varied, imparting the unique nature of each place/subject.
Through this series I’ve learned the importance of trusting intuition, especially when it comes to relaying the life and energy of the subject into each Artwork. Some works in the Paper Places series have progressed dramatically from start to finish, such as January Thaw. Others were influenced by studies to understand spacial, color, or random theories, either my own or as seen in other Artists’ works. For example, March Winds is an ode to Jackson Pollock via Oil pastels, as I never truly understood his paintings until the work in this one unfolded so frenetically. During the course of rendering Moon Over Myrtle I studied works by Cezanne more closely to see how he achieved depth through the use of planes rather than just color.
As I work toward The Majesty of Trees solo exhibition, many of the pieces in the Paper Places series are preliminary works for larger paintings. Each piece in this collection is 11 x 14 inches, either horizontally or vertically hung. All are framed with white double mats and classic-style white frames; size total 22 x 26 inches. Considering mats and frames, 3 inches wide respectively, they were designed to utilize the full value of gallery space, and the Artworks are able to effectively hang closely together if wall space is restricted, and still be appreciated individually.

Children - Graphite Illustrations on Paper
There is a stage of life we can all identify with,
when curiosity reigns
and happiness is a given.
With this series I hoped to bring some of the discipline that drawing commands, back into my everyday work. Portraits also challenge a whole other area of skill. If I paint a lot and don’t keep drawing or sketching a little, those abilities get sloppy. The eraser is used as much as the pencil to create space and texture. These illustrations capture the innocence of early childhood, between the ages of eighteen months and five years old, when there’s an awakening self awareness.
Lucas At The Museum was part of the juried exhibition Growing Up and Looking Back - Reflecting on Childhood, Parenting, and Home at Gallery RFD in Swainsboro, Georgia October 12th through November 3rd, 2007.
