Paper Places, Oil Pastels on Paper
By continuing to push boundaries, to search and research, not settling for long into the comfort of same habits and repetition, only then do we challenge our old skills and learn new ones.
The Paper Places series portray landscapes across the U.S., Canada, Australia, Mexico, and Costa Rica. Deliberately varied, by allowing the intuition to lead the way, each illustration imparts the unique nature of each place through the medium of Oil Pastels. Colors are built up in layers - lightly at first then with a heavy hand - then scratched away using a pottery tool, my nails and whatever works, rebuilt and removed again. Less smudging and blending emphasizes texture. This process happens to some degree in all of my work, but is explored more consciously in this series.
During 2002 we changed residence to the Southern United States from Canada where I had established a small business working freelance for many years. Moving offered the opportunity to fresh-start my career and aim for higher potential. At the same time, even as one who loves to travel I still did not expect such culture-shock, so at the personal level every piece in this series celebrates a new appreciation for the places I’ve been fortunate to visit or live… Home is certainly where the heart is.

All 11 x 14 inches Oil Pastels on paper are framed 22 x 26 inches. With the classic simplicity of white wood frames and white double mats, they were designed so they could hang one above the other in a limited space and still be appreciated as individual works.

With this series I hoped to bring some of the discipline that drawing commands back into my everyday work. Portraits also challenge a whole other area of skill. If I paint a lot and don’t keep drawing or sketching a little, those abilities get sloppy. The eraser is used as much as the pencil to create space and texture. These illustrations are attempt to capture the awakening self awareness of early childhood .
